Puch 15mm Bing carburetor original vs replica - Which is better?
Is a replica 15mm Bing carburetor good enough for your Puch, or do you really need an original Bing? In this PuchShop comparison test, we fitted both carburetors to the same Puch setup, kept the jetting the same, and measured the top speed on our test track in Wageningen.
The result was simple: the replica 15mm Bing carburetor performed almost exactly the same as the original. On this setup, the original 15mm Bing reached 64 km/h, while the replica 15mm Bing reached 65 km/h with the same size 66 main jet.
Watch the original PuchShop test video
In the video below, PuchShop compares an original 15mm Bing carburetor against a replica 15mm Bing carburetor on the same Puch setup. Both carburetors are tested with the same size 66 main jet, making the result easy to compare.
The Puch test setup
To keep the comparison fair, both carburetors were tested on the same moped with the same basic settings. The goal was not to create a perfect laboratory dyno test, but to show how both carburetors perform in a real riding situation.
| Part of the setup | Test specification |
|---|---|
| Engine setup | 70cc PSR cylinder/head setup |
| Carburetor size | 15mm Bing original and 15mm Bing replica |
| Main jet | Size 66 main jet in both carburetors |
| Air filter | Original air filter with enlarged intake opening |
| Exhaust | Standard-style RS cigar exhaust, black version, without internal resonance section |
| Gearing | 14 front sprocket / 48 rear sprocket |
| Speed measurement | Phone speed app mounted on the bike, with GoPro footage for reference |
The gearing was fairly light, which makes sense for a short test track. With longer gearing, for example a 15 tooth front sprocket and a smaller rear sprocket, this setup could likely reach a higher top speed on a longer road.
Back to topOriginal 15mm Bing carburetor test result
The first test was done with an original 15mm Bing carburetor. The carburetor was fitted with a size 66 main jet and used with the modified original air filter.
On the test track, the Puch reached a top speed of 64 km/h with the original 15mm Bing carburetor. For this setup, that is a strong result, especially with the shorter 14/48 gearing and the standard-style RS cigar exhaust.
Replica 15mm Bing carburetor test result
After the first run, the original carburetor was removed and replaced with a replica 15mm Bing carburetor. The same size 66 main jet was fitted to keep the comparison as equal as possible.
The replica carburetor started and idled without problems. After a small idle adjustment, the moped ran cleanly and reached a top speed of 65 km/h.
On the road, there was no clear feeling that the replica carburetor ran worse than the original. The engine pulled well, the throttle response felt normal, and the top speed was even slightly higher in this test.
Original vs replica 15mm Bing carburetor comparison
| Comparison point | Original 15mm Bing | Replica 15mm Bing |
|---|---|---|
| Main jet used in test | Size 66 | Size 66 |
| Top speed in test | 64 km/h | 65 km/h |
| Idle | Good | Good after small adjustment |
| Throttle response | Good | Good |
| Real-world performance | Strong result | Very similar to original |
| Best reason to choose it | Original part, classic choice | Available, affordable, and proven in this test |
What does the result mean?
The difference between 64 km/h and 65 km/h is very small. In real riding, wind, rider weight, road surface, gearing, engine temperature, and GPS measurement can all influence the result. The important takeaway is not that the replica is magically faster, but that it performed at the same level as the original carburetor in this test.
That makes the replica 15mm Bing a good option if you want a fresh carburetor for your Puch without hunting for an old original unit.
Back to topTuning notes before fitting a replica 15mm Bing
A replica carburetor is not a magic bolt-on part that should be installed straight from the box without checking anything. The same is true for an original carburetor. Before mounting the carburetor, clean it, inspect it, and make sure the jetting fits your engine setup.
Is a size 66 main jet always correct?
No. A size 66 main jet worked well in this specific test setup, but that does not mean it is perfect for every Puch. Carburetor tuning depends on your cylinder, exhaust, air filter, intake, ignition, fuel, and local conditions.
In the video, a size 68 main jet is mentioned as something that could also be tested. That is exactly how proper carburetor tuning works: use the test result as a starting point, then fine-tune for your own engine.
Should you be afraid of aftermarket Bing carburetors?
No. The test shows that a replica 15mm Bing carburetor can run very well when cleaned, mounted correctly, and jetted properly. A badly adjusted carburetor will always run badly, whether it is original or replica.
Back to topSo, which 15mm Bing carburetor is better?
If you already have a clean, complete, original 15mm Bing carburetor, it is still a great carburetor. Original Bing parts are well known, reliable, and correct for many classic Puch setups.
But if your original carburetor is worn, missing parts, dirty, damaged, or simply too expensive to replace, the replica 15mm Bing is a strong alternative. In this test, the replica matched the original and even reached 1 km/h more top speed on the same setup.
For most riders, the best choice is simple: choose the carburetor that is clean, complete, easy to tune, and matched to your engine setup. A properly prepared replica 15mm Bing can absolutely do the job.
Back to topFAQ: Puch 15mm Bing original vs replica carburetor
Is a replica 15mm Bing carburetor good for a Puch?
Yes. In this PuchShop test, the replica 15mm Bing carburetor performed almost the same as the original 15mm Bing carburetor. It idled well after adjustment and reached 65 km/h on the test setup.
Was the original 15mm Bing faster than the replica?
No. In this test, the original 15mm Bing reached 64 km/h and the replica 15mm Bing reached 65 km/h. The difference is small, but it shows that the replica did not lose performance.
Which main jet was used in the test?
Both carburetors were tested with a size 66 main jet. This worked well for the tested 70cc PSR setup, but your own Puch may need different jetting.
Do I need to clean a new replica carburetor before fitting it?
Yes. Always clean and inspect a carburetor before mounting it, even if it is new. Check the float, jet, needle, slide, and fuel passages before starting the engine.
Can I use the same jetting as the video?
You can use it as a reference point, but not as a guaranteed setting. Your ideal jet size depends on your cylinder, exhaust, air filter, intake, ignition, and riding conditions.
Is an original Bing carburetor still worth using?
Yes. A good original Bing carburetor is still a solid choice. But if the original is worn, expensive, or difficult to find, a correctly prepared replica 15mm Bing can be a very good alternative.
