Choose the correct liquid gasket for your Puch

Liquid gasket products do not all have the same properties. Check where the sealant will be used and confirm that it is suitable for the temperature, pressure, fuel, oil and surface materials found at that joint.

Application Determine whether the sealant is intended for crankcase halves, covers, transmission parts, intake joints or use with an existing gasket.

Temperature range Use a product that can withstand the operating temperature of the component and surrounding engine area.

Fluid resistance Check whether the sealant is resistant to engine oil, transmission oil, fuel or other fluids at the joint.

Required clearance Use only a thin and controlled layer where the distance between assembled parts affects bearing, shaft or gear clearance.

Liquid gasket is not suitable for every sealing surface

Do not automatically replace a cylinder head gasket, exhaust gasket, sealing ring, shaft seal or specially shaped gasket with liquid sealant.

These parts may require a specific material, thickness or construction to withstand heat, pressure or movement.

Common uses for liquid gasket sealant

Liquid sealant is normally used on clean and accurately fitted surfaces. Its exact use depends on the Puch model, engine design and product specifications.

Crankcase halves Suitable sealant can close small surface imperfections between accurately fitted crankcase halves.

Engine and transmission covers Some covers are sealed with liquid gasket while others require a paper gasket of a specific thickness.

Holding a gasket in position A very thin layer can help keep a difficult paper or fiber gasket aligned during assembly when the product permits this use.

Selected intake connections Only use sealant on an intake joint when it is compatible with fuel and designed for that application.

Two stroke crankcase sealing must be airtight

A two stroke engine uses crankcase pressure to move the fuel and air mixture through the engine. A leaking crankcase, intake connection or seal can allow unwanted air into the engine and create a lean mixture.

Symptoms can include an unstable idle, hanging engine speed, difficult carburetor tuning, overheating or poor engine performance.

Prepare the sealing surfaces correctly

Liquid gasket cannot reliably compensate for dirt, old sealant, deep scratches or badly distorted parts. Both surfaces must be prepared before applying the new sealant.

Remove old sealant Remove all old gasket and sealant residue without cutting into soft aluminum surfaces.

Protect the engine interior Prevent removed material and cleaning residue from entering bearings, ports, oil passages and the crankcase.

Clean and degrease Remove oil, fuel and loose dirt using a cleaner that is suitable for the component and sealant.

Inspect both surfaces Check for scratches, raised edges, corrosion, cracks, distortion and damaged fastening threads.

Avoid aggressive cleaning methods

Hard scrapers, screwdrivers and aggressive abrasive tools can damage soft aluminum sealing surfaces. New sealant may not close deep scratches or gouges.

How to apply liquid gasket

Follow the product instructions for bead size, layer thickness, assembly time and curing. More sealant does not produce a better seal.

Apply a thin layer Use only enough product to create a continuous seal across the intended surface.

Keep passages clear Do not apply sealant across oil holes, fuel passages, intake openings or other functional channels.

Assemble within the specified time Some products must be assembled immediately while others need a short skin forming period.

Allow proper curing Wait for the specified curing period before filling the engine with oil or fuel or starting it.

Do not apply an excessive bead

Excess sealant can be squeezed into the engine when the parts are tightened. Loose material can block oil passages, enter bearings or interfere with internal engine components.

Applying sealant around bolt holes and passages

Plan the sealant path before joining the parts. The bead must create a continuous seal while remaining clear of openings that need to function.

Bolt holes Apply the sealant on the correct side of each bolt hole so the joint remains sealed without filling the hole.

Oil passages Keep every lubrication opening completely clear and check both adjoining parts before assembly.

Intake openings Keep sealant outside the intake tract so cured material cannot disturb airflow or enter the engine.

Outside edge A neat bead should remain inside the sealing area and should not spread excessively beyond the joint.

Assemble and tighten the parts correctly

Bring the parts together carefully without sliding them excessively across one another. Sliding can move the sealant away from the intended sealing path.

Align before contact Position the parts, locating pins and fasteners correctly before pressing the sealing surfaces together.

Start fasteners by hand Make sure every bolt or screw enters its thread correctly before applying tightening force.

Tighten evenly Use the correct sequence and gradually tighten all fasteners to the specified torque.

Inspect after curing Check the joint after the curing period, first heat cycles and initial test ride.

Do not overtighten a leaking joint

Excessive torque can distort covers and crankcase sections or damage threads in an aluminum engine.

If the joint still leaks, inspect the sealant application, mating surfaces, fasteners and nearby shaft seals instead of tightening the parts further.

When should liquid gasket be replaced?

After disassembly Remove the old cured sealant and apply new product whenever the sealed joint is opened.

Visible oil leakage Oil appearing along a crankcase or cover joint may indicate failed sealant or a damaged sealing surface.

Suspected air leak An unstable idle or hanging engine speed can indicate a leak at the intake, crankcase or another sealing point.

During an engine rebuild Replace old liquid sealant while the engine is apart and inspect every sealing surface before reassembly.

Can liquid gasket replace a paper gasket?

Only when the engine design and sealant specification allow it. Some paper gaskets also control component spacing, so replacing them with liquid sealant can change internal clearance.

Can I use liquid gasket on crankcase halves?

Yes, when the product is designed for crankcase sealing and the mating surfaces are clean, flat and correctly prepared. Apply only the specified amount.

How much liquid gasket should I apply?

Apply a thin and continuous layer according to the product instructions. Excess product can be squeezed into the engine and block passages.

Can liquid gasket stop an air leak?

It can seal a suitable joint when correctly applied, but it will not repair a damaged shaft seal, cracked component, loose fastener or badly distorted surface.

Must liquid gasket cure before starting the engine?
