Choose the right gasket tools for the job

Different stages of a gasket repair require different tools. First identify whether you need to remove old gasket material, clean cured sealant, cut a new gasket or create accurate bolt holes.

Gasket scrapers Used to remove old gasket material from flat sealing surfaces while maintaining controlled contact with the component.
Scraper blades Replace dull or damaged blades so old gasket residue can be removed cleanly without excessive pressure.
Hole punch tools Create clean circular bolt holes in gasket paper without tearing or crushing the surrounding material.
Gasket remover products Help soften dried adhesive, old gasket residue and cured sealant before careful mechanical removal.

Protect soft aluminum sealing surfaces

Deep scratches and gouges can cause leaks even after a new gasket or liquid sealant has been installed. Avoid using screwdrivers, damaged blades or aggressive grinding tools as gasket scrapers.

Keep the tool flat against the sealing surface and use controlled pressure. Never force the edge into the aluminum.

Removing old gasket material

Old gasket material must be removed completely before the new gasket is installed. Remaining pieces can prevent the parts from sitting flat and create uneven sealing pressure.

Protect open engine areas Cover bearings, ports, oil channels and the crankcase so removed material cannot enter the engine.

Using gasket remover spray

Gasket remover products can soften stubborn gasket residue, dried adhesive and cured sealant. This can reduce the amount of scraping required, but the product must be suitable for the surface being cleaned.

Read the instructions Check the recommended application time, ventilation requirements and material compatibility before use.
Test sensitive surfaces Keep aggressive cleaning products away from paint, plastic, rubber and finished surfaces unless compatibility is confirmed.
Allow time to work Let the product soften the old material for the specified period before attempting to scrape it away.

Never leave an oil or intake passage partially covered

A wrongly cut gasket can restrict lubrication, fuel flow or intake airflow. Compare the finished gasket with the complete sealing surface before assembly.

Working with liquid gasket sealant

Accessories used for removing old sealant and preparing surfaces are also important when replacing liquid gasket. The old material must be removed before the new product is applied.

Remove cured sealant Carefully remove all old liquid gasket without pushing loose pieces into the engine.
Degrease both surfaces Oil and fuel residue can prevent the new sealant from bonding evenly to the component.
Keep passages clear Do not allow cleaning residue or new sealant to enter oil holes, bearings or intake openings.
Apply only the required amount Excess liquid gasket can be squeezed into the engine when the parts are tightened.

Both sealing surfaces should be clean, flat and free from old material before the new gasket is installed.

Remove loose debris Make sure no scraper residue, gasket fragments or cleaning material remains on or inside the component.
Check for scratches Deep damage may require repair instead of simply installing a thicker gasket or adding more sealant.
Check for distortion A warped cover or flange may continue to leak even when a new gasket is installed correctly.

Can I use a screwdriver to remove an old gasket?

This is not recommended. A screwdriver can cut or gouge a soft aluminum sealing surface. Use a suitable gasket scraper and controlled pressure instead.
