Choose the correct connecting rod for your Puch crankshaft

Start by identifying the exact engine and crankshaft. Compare the original connecting rod and crankpin with the product specifications before ordering. A rod that looks similar may still have different dimensions.

Connecting rod length Measure from the center of the big end bore to the center of the small end bore. A different length changes the piston position in the cylinder.
Crankpin diameter The crankpin must match the connecting rod, big end bearing and crankshaft webs.
Big end width The assembled connecting rod must fit correctly between the crankshaft webs with the proper side clearance.
Piston pin diameter The small end and needle bearing must match the piston pin used by the piston.

Important connecting rod dimensions

Accurate measurements are essential when combining a connecting rod with an existing crankshaft, piston and cylinder.

Center to center length This measurement affects piston height at top dead center and bottom dead center.
Small end width The small end must fit between the piston bosses without binding or excessive side clearance.
Big end bore The bore must match the crankpin and big end bearing supplied or specified for the rod.
Big end side clearance The connecting rod must move freely between the crankshaft webs without excessive sideways movement.

A different rod length changes the engine geometry

Installing a longer or shorter connecting rod changes the piston position in the cylinder. This can affect deck height, squish clearance, compression, port timing and cylinder spacing.

Do not substitute a different rod length unless the complete cylinder and piston setup has been designed for it.

What can be included with a connecting rod kit?

The exact contents vary by product. Read the individual product description before assuming that every rebuild part is included.

Connecting rod The main replacement component linking the crankshaft to the piston.
Crankpin The pressed pin that connects the two crankshaft webs through the big end of the rod.

Check the crankshaft webs before rebuilding

A new connecting rod cannot repair damaged crankshaft webs. The press fit between the crankpin and webs must remain strong enough to hold the rebuilt crankshaft securely.

Crankpin holes Inspect the holes for wear, damage or loss of the required press fit.
Crankshaft webs Check for cracks, impact damage, corrosion and signs that the crankshaft has moved or twisted.
Shaft ends Inspect bearing seats, tapers, threads and keyways before investing in a rebuild.

Do not reuse damaged crankshaft webs

Worn crankpin holes can reduce the press fit and allow the crankshaft to move out of alignment during use.

When the crankshaft webs, shaft ends or bearing seats are damaged, replacing the complete crankshaft is usually safer than installing only a new connecting rod.

Rebuilding a pressed crankshaft

A Puch crankshaft must be pressed apart and assembled with controlled force. After pressing, the crankshaft must be aligned and checked for runout.

Hydraulic press A suitable press is required to remove and install the crankpin without hammering the crankshaft.
Correct support The crankshaft webs must be supported evenly to prevent bending or other damage during pressing.

Connecting rod replacement is specialist work
