Hugo Satter wins Expi Class in Assen, Rens Straver crowned 50cc Expi Class champion
After the summer break, Saturday, August 29, marked the fifth and penultimate race day of the 2026 Puchshop Racing Cup. Once again, the races were held at the TT Junior Track in Assen, this time using the Dion Otten layout, which runs counterclockwise.
The day started with rain, but after the first qualifying session on a wet track, the remaining sessions were held on almost completely dry asphalt.
In the Standard Class, the championship had already been decided after the previous race, with Gijs Huisman crowned champion. Huisman was also the fastest rider in qualifying.
In the Expi Class, the title fight remained wide open. Hugo Satter arrived in Assen leading the championship, but Jannick Vos remained close behind. Satter was fastest in qualifying and earned pole position, with Vos and Jordi Minnen joining him on the front row.
In the 50cc Expi Class, Rens Straver was already close to securing the championship before the race. Only Twan Dekkers still had a mathematical chance of taking the title, but the biggest challenge in Assen came from a completely different direction.
Jan van Ipenburg made the switch from the 70cc class to the 50cc class and immediately showed strong pace. Things did not quite go his way in qualifying, however, where Straver set the fastest time.
Race 1
Expi Class Race 1
Satter lived up to his status as the favorite. After a strong start, he immediately took the lead and managed to keep Vos behind him for all 15 laps.
Thimo Minnen held third place for much of the race, but during the second half Jordi Minnen found a way past and Thimo had to settle for fourth.
Bas Wallet looked set for an impressive fifth place before retiring from the race, promoting Robin Mak into fifth.
At the front, Satter remained in control and took another important championship victory ahead of Vos and Jordi Minnen.
50cc Expi Class Race 1
Jan van Ipenburg made a flying start and, for much of the race, it looked as though he might claim victory immediately on his 50cc Expi debut.
Toward the end of the race, however, Van Ipenburg began to fall back and Rens Straver was ready to take advantage.
Straver crossed the line first ahead of Van Ipenburg and Chris Weenen. Twan Dekkers finished fourth, which meant Straver had done enough to secure the 2026 50cc Expi Class championship.
Congratulations to Rens Straver, the 2026 Puchshop Racing Cup 50cc Expi Class champion!
Standard Class Race 1
Newly crowned champion Gijs Huisman was unstoppable and led the race from start to finish.
Syl Kooistra crossed the line in second place, while Eric de Jong completed the podium in third. Mark Hooijmans did not make it to the finish.
Race 2
Expi Class Race 2
The second Expi race produced another victory for Satter. This time he crossed the finish line with a slightly larger advantage over championship rival Vos.
Robin Mak claimed third place, while Jordi and Thimo Minnen produced an entertaining battle for fourth. Thimo eventually came out on top.
Wallet reached the finish this time and was rewarded with a strong sixth place.
Satter left Assen with the biggest trophy of the day and, more importantly, a 28 point advantage over Vos in the championship standings.
With only one race remaining in the 2026 season, there are still a maximum of 50 championship points available. The Expi Class title will therefore be decided at the season finale in Assen.
50cc Expi Class Race 2
This time Straver took the lead when the starting lights went out, but as the race progressed Van Ipenburg managed to find a way past the newly crowned champion.
The battle remained close all the way to the finish, but Van Ipenburg held on to take his first 50cc Expi victory.
That victory was also enough to give Van Ipenburg the overall win for the day on his 50cc Expi debut.
Standard Class Race 2
Kooistra made the best start in the second Standard Class race, but he could not keep Huisman behind him for long.
Once Huisman moved into the lead, the champion again rode unchallenged to victory. Kooistra finished second, while Hooijmans recovered from his retirement in Race 1 to take third.
This time it was De Jong who failed to reach the finish.
