Hugo Satter the strongest in Veldhoven

After the first two race days had been held at the TT Junior Track in Assen, the Puchshop Racing Cup riders traveled to the south of the country for the third round of the championship. At Kart Circuit De Landsard in Veldhoven, two qualifying sessions and two races were scheduled for Saturday, June 6.

After the races in Veldhoven had been completely soaked by rain in previous years—two years ago the water even had to be pumped off the circuit—there was good hope for a dry event this time. Despite dark clouds gathering during the afternoon, the weather remained dry. It was a welcome relief for the riders and the perfect recipe for exciting racing, with one of last season’s standout performers making a strong return: Swiss rider Michel Aregger.

Would championship leader Jannick Vos be able to stay ahead of the fast Swiss rider, or could Hugo Satter turn his 2-point deficit into a lead?

Qualifying at Kart Circuit De Landsard

Satter showed immediately in qualifying that he was determined to win. He set the fastest lap by almost a full second ahead of Vos, who in turn was only a fraction quicker than Aregger.

Robin Mak, winner of the previous round in Assen, recorded the fourth-fastest time ahead of Jordi and Thimo Minnen. Another familiar face, Jean-Paul van de Heijning, was back on the grid but unfortunately could do no better than seventh in qualifying. Mechanical problems would force him to watch the remainder of the day from the sidelines.

When the lights went out, Vos made the best start and immediately appeared to gain an advantage over Satter. However, Satter increased his pace and closed back in on Vos, while Aregger recovered from a poor start by overtaking Jordi Minnen and Mak to join the leading group.

The trio spent the first half of the race running nose-to-tail before Satter managed to take the lead away from Vos. Entering the final lap, Satter still looked to have the upper hand, but while lapping backmarkers in the final series of corners, Vos handled the situation slightly better and managed to snatch the lead back.

Vos crossed the finish line first, ahead of Satter and Aregger. Mak finished a comfortable fourth. Thimo Minnen appeared set to secure fifth place, but fuel problems struck his machine in the closing stages. Jan van Ipenburg took advantage and stole fifth place at the finish. Jordi Minnen also experienced mechanical issues and had to settle for seventh.

Standard class race 1

In the Standard class, Gijs Huisman started from pole position ahead of Eric de Jong, who had shown strong pace throughout the day, and Mark Hooijmans.

De Jong got the best start, but Huisman quickly took over the lead and pulled away from the field. Hooijmans moved into second place but was unable to enjoy it for long, retiring due to a dragging front brake. Not long afterward, De Jong was also forced out with a cracked exhaust. Huisman was then able to cruise safely to victory.

After Chris Weenen had ridden in Assen, it was Thomas Carver’s turn to take over the handlebars of their shared machine. He qualified second behind championship leader Rens Straver.

In the first race, however, Straver crashed, clearing the way for Carver to take victory. Straver quickly recovered and continued the race, finishing second ahead of Twan Dekkers.

Race 2

In the second race, Satter immediately grabbed the lead ahead of Vos and Mak. Mak suffered the first crash of the race in Turn 3, while Vos went down three corners later. Both riders were able to continue, but by then Satter had already built a gap.

Nevertheless, victory would not come easily. Once again, Aregger recovered quickly from a poor start and charged through the field. In the very last corner, he even managed to place his front wheel alongside Satter’s Puch, but this time Satter held firm and secured the win.

Mak rode an impressive recovery race and was rewarded with third place. The battle for fourth was fought between Jordi and Thimo Minnen and remained close right up to the finish. Ultimately, Jordi crossed the line just ahead of his brother.

Vos fought his way back to sixth after his crash, which was just enough to secure third place in the overall day standings behind winner Satter and runner-up Aregger. Satter made the biggest gain of the day and took over the championship lead.

Standard class race 2

For De Jong, the race was already over during the warm-up lap when the silencer came loose from his spare exhaust system.

Huisman once again took victory, securing the overall win for the day as well. Hooijmans finished second and joined him on the podium as runner-up in the day classification.

50cc Expi class race 2

This time Straver rode a faultless race to victory ahead of Carver and Dekkers. Straver and Carver finished the day tied on points, but because the higher score in the second race serves as the tiebreaker for the day classification, Straver claimed the top step of the podium.
