Puch petcocks, fuel hoses and fuel filters

Before ordering, check the petcock connection, fuel-hose diameter, filter connection size and available routing space. A hose that is too loose can leak, while one that is too tight may be difficult to install or damage the connection.

Choose the correct fuel-system parts for your Puch

The fuel system must allow gasoline to flow from the tank to the carburetor without leaking, kinking or becoming contaminated. Match each part to the tank outlet, carburetor connection and hose size already used on your moped.

Fuel petcock Controls fuel flow from the tank and may include off, on and reserve positions depending on the design.
Fuel hose Connects the petcock, fuel filter and carburetor. Choose the correct internal diameter and suitable fuel-resistant material.
Inline fuel filter Helps catch dirt and contamination before they reach the carburetor jets and passages.
Clamps and connectors Help secure the hose and create a reliable connection at the petcock, filter and carburetor.

Fuel flow depends on the complete system

A new petcock or larger hose will not solve every fuel-supply problem. Restricted tank ventilation, a dirty filter, a kinked hose or contamination inside the carburetor can also reduce fuel flow.

Route the hose with smooth bends and enough clearance from hot, sharp or moving parts. Avoid excessive hose length, tight loops and low points where fuel or air can become trapped.

Fuel petcock, hose or filter: what should you replace?

Replace the petcock when it leaks, becomes difficult to operate or no longer shuts off the fuel correctly. Check that the new petcock has the correct tank connection, outlet direction and reserve function for your setup.

Replace fuel hose that has become hard, cracked, swollen, discolored or loose on the fittings. A contaminated or restricted fuel filter should also be replaced rather than cleaned unless the manufacturer specifically states that it is reusable.

Check the complete fuel system for leaks

Inspect the tank outlet, petcock, hose connections, filter and carburetor inlet after installation. Fuel should not seep from the threads, fittings or hose ends.

Gasoline is highly flammable. Work in a ventilated area away from sparks, flames and hot engine parts, and clean up spilled fuel before starting the moped.

Do not use a filter that restricts fuel flow

A filter must be suitable for the fuel system and provide enough flow for the carburetor and engine setup. A filter that is too small, clogged or incorrectly installed can allow the float bowl to run low under load.

If the engine loses power during longer full-throttle runs but recovers after slowing down, inspect the tank ventilation, petcock, hose routing and filter before changing the carburetor jetting.

Which fuel-hose size do I need?

Measure the outside diameter of the petcock, filter and carburetor fittings. The hose must fit securely without being forced excessively or remaining loose on the connection.

Do I need an inline fuel filter on my Puch?

An inline filter can help protect the carburetor from dirt and rust from the tank. It must be installed in the correct direction and should not restrict the fuel flow required by the engine.

Which direction should the fuel filter face?

Follow the arrow or flow marking on the filter body. The arrow normally points in the direction of fuel flow from the tank toward the carburetor.

Why is my Puch petcock leaking?
