Shim washers are used to position components and control side movement inside the engine. Their thickness and location can affect shaft alignment, gear position and operating clearance.
Record the original position
Note where each shim washer is installed when the E50 is disassembled.
Measure the thickness
Do not assume two washers are identical simply because they have the same outside diameter.
Inspect for wear
Replace bent, cracked or heavily worn washers rather than reinstalling damaged parts.
Check movement after assembly
Make sure the assembled components move correctly without excessive side movement or binding.
Do not leave out an E50 shim washer because the engine still turns
Excessive movement may not be obvious when turning the engine by hand. Incorrect spacing can cause noise, poor component alignment and accelerated wear once the engine is running.
Circlips and retaining parts
Circlips are small components with an important job. They retain shafts and other parts in their correct position and must sit fully inside the intended groove.
Check the correct size
Match the circlip to the shaft or bore diameter and the dimensions of the retaining groove.
Inspect the groove
Remove dirt and check for wear or damage before installing the retaining ring.
Avoid overstretching
Open the circlip only as far as needed during installation.
Confirm full seating
Check that the complete circlip is seated inside its groove before continuing assembly.
Replace a damaged or weakened circlip
Do not attempt to reshape a circlip that is bent, cracked, stretched or badly worn. A retaining ring that leaves its groove while the engine is running can cause serious internal damage.
Bolts, nuts and threaded parts
Correct fasteners are essential for keeping the E50 engine properly assembled. Check thread size, length and condition before using replacement hardware.
Match the thread
Confirm the thread diameter and pitch before installing a replacement bolt, nut or stud.
Check the length
A fastener that is too short may not engage enough thread, while one that is too long can bottom out.
Replace damaged hardware
Do not reuse fasteners with damaged threads, rounded heads, heavy corrosion or visible stretching.
Use the correct torque
Tighten engine hardware according to the correct specification and sequence for the component.
Be careful with threads in aluminum E50 engine cases
Excessive torque can damage or pull threads from the engine case. If a thread is already damaged, repair it correctly instead of trying to compensate by tightening the fastener further.
Organize the small parts during an E50 rebuild
Good organization during disassembly makes the rebuild easier and reduces the risk of installing a part in the wrong location.
Photograph the assembly
Take photos of shim positions, fastener locations and retaining parts before removal.
Separate parts by location
Keep hardware from each cover, shaft or engine section in its own labeled container.
Inspect before reuse
Clean every small part and replace components that are worn, damaged or questionable.
Prepare parts before assembly
Have replacement shims, circlips and fasteners ready before the engine goes back together.
